Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a carnival barker, as a young girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. However, she left school after just two years of school to pursue an acting career. This path was fraught with problems. When she was offered a job as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to secure opportunities in the stage. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar, as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. She made enough money with her ushering duties in the morning, while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
